Paintings built on four decades of looking
Martin Osner came to painting after a lifetime of photography, and it shows in how he handles light. His paintings move between three subjects: the dignified women of his African Queen portraits, the farm roads and homesteads of the Klein Karoo and Montagu, and trees that stand in for memory and faith.
Eternal Shepherd, his most recent work, is about guidance and belonging. Rooted in Silence remembers the lockdown, a single tree beside a red boundary, and now also appears on the label of Bloupunt Chenin Blanc.
The African Queen collection
The Sisters of Eight
Eight portraits of African women, each with her own name and story, painted by Martin Osner. Inathi is the firstborn, calm and dignified, carrying the memory of her line. Thandiwe, whose name means beloved, now also appears on the label of Bloupunt Cabernet Sauvignon.
Seven of the eight sisters have found homes with collectors. One commission remains open, for a collector who would like to complete the family with a portrait of their own.

Commission a painting, or ask about one
If a painting has already found a home, or you have a space that needs something made for it, Martin Osner and Samantha Lee Osner accept commissions that suit their style. Osner Gallery is at 14 Luisa Way, Hout Bay, twenty minutes from Cape Town. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 4pm. Sunday by appointment, booked the day before. Plan your visit.
Do Martin Osner and Samantha Lee Osner accept painting commissions?
Yes, when the commission suits their style and creative direction. Every commission starts with a conversation about the space and the story.
How long does a commissioned painting take?
Usually four to six weeks, depending on the size and complexity of the piece.
Can I commission a version of a painting that has sold?
In some cases, yes. If the original owner gives permission, we may be able to accept a re commission. Tell us which painting you have in mind.
Do the paintings come framed?
Most are framed, especially those that have hung in an exhibition. You can buy them as they are or have us reframe them in our own workshop.
